My watercolor paintings, using only three primary colors, are rich and bold colorful evocative images derived through many translucent layers of watercolor glazes. The planned, and frequently accidental, experience of mixing water with pigment is spiritual. I am inspired by the moment as the image below reflects. Some paintings tell a story, others capture a fleeting glance to let the observer experience a personal emotional moment.  Most of my original watercolors are matted, framed, and ready to hang. My  representational style paintings have been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout San Diego, Los Angeles, and in Arizona, and are in private collections in Europe, Tokyo and the United States.

JIM BATES WATERCOLORS

Despite the effect of COVID19 on all of us, life goes on. For me, I turn to my tubes of watercolor paint and express both my sadness for those who have lost their lives in the pandemic and hope for a better day when normalcy returns. This painting (left) reflects music and hope, a combination seen throughout the world as individuals cope with changes in their lives they never expected.
